Thousands of businesses could potentially be facing serious website security problems following a major security breach involving TeamUpdraft, the company behind UpdraftPlus, one of the world’s most widely used WordPress backup plugins.
With UpdraftPlus installed on more than four million WordPress websites worldwide, the incident has raised significant concerns about website security, unauthorised access and the potential long-term consequences for businesses and organisations.
At Square Cactus, we believe this incident is another important reminder that simply having a website and installing a few security plugins is not enough. Websites need regular maintenance, monitoring and professional support.
What Has Happened?
Over the weekend of 17 and 18 October 2026, TeamUpdraft identified unauthorised access to its website and subsequently confirmed that its customer database may have been accessed.
The potentially exposed information includes customer names, email addresses, billing information, encrypted password records and, crucially, connection keys used by its UpdraftCentral website management service.
These connection keys allow websites to be managed remotely.
Security researchers have since identified attacks in which criminals used compromised keys to gain access to connected WordPress websites, install malicious plugins and potentially create unauthorised administrator accounts.
The particularly worrying aspect is that some of these attacks were carried out against websites running up-to-date versions of WordPress and UpdraftPlus.
The UpdraftPlus plugin downloads themselves were not compromised. Instead, the attackers exploited access through the associated remote management service.
What Could This Mean for Website Owners?
For businesses relying on their websites to generate enquiries, take bookings, sell products or communicate with customers, the consequences of a successful attack could be extremely serious.
Potential problems include:
- Website downtime: Malicious software could cause websites to stop working or become inaccessible.
- Unauthorised access: Criminals could gain control of website administration, content and functionality.
- Customer data risks: A compromised website could potentially expose sensitive business or customer information.
- Search engine damage: Hacked websites can be used to distribute spam or malicious content, potentially affecting their Google rankings and reputation.
- Financial losses: Disrupted online sales, bookings and enquiries can have a direct impact on businesses.
- Long-term security problems: Malicious files or hidden administrator accounts can remain in place even after the original security issue has been addressed.
There have already been confirmed reports of malicious plugins being installed on affected websites.
The full scale of the incident is still being investigated, but we suspect many website owners may only discover problems days or weeks after the initial attack.
Is Your WordPress Website Affected?
Importantly, not every website using UpdraftPlus has been compromised.
The principal risk identified in this incident concerns websites connected to the cloud-based UpdraftCentral management service.
TeamUpdraft has released emergency updates, including versions 1.26.13 and 2.26.13, which revoke affected connection keys.
However, updating the plugin does not automatically remove malicious software or unauthorised accounts that may already have been installed.
Website owners should urgently:
- Ensure UpdraftPlus is updated to the latest secure version.
- Check and remove old UpdraftCentral connection keys.
- Review WordPress administrator accounts for unfamiliar users.
- Inspect installed plugins, including hidden or must-use plugins, for suspicious additions.
- Change relevant administrator and TeamUpdraft account passwords.
- Check website activity and security logs for unusual behaviour.
- Verify that website backups are available, secure and working correctly.
If you suspect your website has been compromised, professional investigation may be necessary before restoring services.
Website Security Is About More Than Installing Plugins
One of the biggest misconceptions about website security is that installing WordPress updates and security software is sufficient to keep a website safe.
Unfortunately, it isn’t always that simple.
This incident demonstrates how even well-maintained websites can become vulnerable when a trusted third-party service suffers a security breach.
And for businesses without dedicated technical support, recognising the warning signs of a compromised website can be particularly difficult.
A website might appear to be working normally while malicious code or unauthorised access remains hidden behind the scenes.
That is why we believe proactive website management, reliable backups, regular security checks and access to professional technical support are so important.
